Changing the name on your credit card is not something many people go through in their life. Once you’ve gone through the legal process of changing your name, you’ll also need to change your name on your credit cards.
Below, you can find out how and when to change your name on a credit card.
Before You Change Your Name on a Card
Changing your name on your social security card requires a trip to the Social Security office. Be sure to print and fill out an application for a Social Security Card. Make sure you take your completed application and proof of your name change to the Social Security office to complete the process.
Once you’ve changed your name on your Social Security card, you can change your name on your driver’s license. Find your nearest DMV, with your name change documents, your old driver’s license, and some other form of identification such as a social security.
Changing Your Name on Your Credit Cards
Once you have completed the name changing process, you should then contact your credit card issuers in order to change your name on your credit card.
Once you’ve completed the process, your credit card issuer will mail a new credit card to you with your new name embossed on the front.
Generally calling the number on the back of your credit is the best way to initiate the process. You may need to mail, fax, or mail copies of your documentation to complete your name change request.
Changing Your Name on Your Credit Report
You are not required to notify the credit bureau when you change your name. When your credit card company updates your credit report information, your new name will be sent to the credit bureaus along with the rest of your account information.
Your name will appear in the personal information section of your credit report along with any other variations of your name.
